X-URL: http://www.OMNIport.net/ To: OMNIport Customer Subject: Loss of Mail Server Access Hello, We were SLAMMED!!! >From approximately 15:00 until midnight on 12-06-2003, the mail server was virtually unavailable due to an unusually high load caused by an E-MAIL ONLY customer having the W32/Swen.A.mm virus/worm. This one machine was able to send out such a high volume of virus-ladened messages that the "bounced" messages alone were enough to overload our mail server. The situation was quickly detected, but it took several hours to be able to disable the account and restore the server's working space. No data was lost and all your mailboxes are fully accessable. If any messages were inbound to your mailbox while the server was unavailable, the sending server has (most likely) already attempted to resend the message and succeeded. There may be some servers with short timeouts that will give up after only a couple of attempts at delivering the mail. These servers will send a message back to the sender to inform them of their difficulty in delivering the mail. Thus, the sender may resend the mail at a later date. We are very sorry for any loss of access to your e-mail that you might have experienced due to the server inavailablility. Until the infected machine's owner can remove the virus, there may be periods of inavailablilty due to "rejecting" messages inbound to the mailbox of the user who's machine is infected. However, these periods of inaccessability will not last very long at all.
